As a student at Harvard in the 1930s, Henry McIlhenny set out to form a great art collection. Following the principles established by his teacher -- to collect only in selected areas and to acquire only the finest objects available -- he concentrated on 19th-century French paintings and drawings, and with the collaboration of his mother succeeded admirably in this goal. By the time of his death in 1986, the collection included such masterpieces as Degas¹s ³Interior,² Toulouse-Lautrec¹s ³At the Moulin Rouge,² and Renoir¹s ³Mlle Legrand.² McIlhenny also bought for his house in Phila. significant pieces of silver, and furniture in the Empire and Restoration styles. This collection is one of the most important donations of art ever made to a public institution. Color photos.Rishel, Joshua J. is the author of 'Henry P. McIlhenny Collection An Illustrated History' with ISBN 9780756766870 and ISBN 0756766877.
